Cooking and Eating

Cooking Poem

When you’re cooking in the kitchen,
You’re learning all the while —
To pour and measure, mix and stir
And sift flour into a pile.
         Scrub your hands before you start
         Then gather up the gear —
         Like pots’n pans and measuring cups
         That you use throughout the year.
Go over the recipe, step-by-step,
So you’ll know just what to do.
By carefully following the directions,
It won’t be hard for you.
         Have a hot pad handy
         And an adult standing by —
         So you won’t hurt yourself
         When using the stove or baking a pie.
Besides the fun and learning,
There’s always cleaning up to do,
And even though it’s quite a chore,
It’s part of cooking too.
         But after all the work is done,
         It will soon be time for dinner.
         And when someone asks for seconds,
         You’ll know you’ve cooked a winner!

We’re Going To Make a Cake

(to the tune of “The Farmer’s in his Dell”)

We’re going to make a cake, we’re going to make a cake;
We’re going to make it really big,
Because we all like cake.

Flour in the bowl, flour in the bowl;
Stir it with a great big spoon,
Flour in the bowl.

continue with other ingredients: sugar, salt,
raisins, butter, etc.

Put it in the oven, put it in the oven;
Take care not to slam the door,
Until it’s nicely cooked.

Icing on the top, icing on the top;
Spread it with a big, flat knife,
Icing on the top.

We all have a piece, we all have a piece;
Some for you and some for me,
There’s some for everyone.

And now it’s all gone, and now it’s all gone;
Yumm it was very good,
Now it’s all gone.

I Like to Eat!

I like hotdogs
I like beans,
I like eating in my jeans.
         I like french fries
         I like ham
         I like eating in my jams.
I like cookies
I like pie
I like eating in my tie.
         I like bagels
         I like lox
         I like eating in my socks.
I like pancakes
I like molasses
I like eating in my glasses.
         I like veggies
         I like fruit
         I like eating in my boots.

Are You Eating

(to the tune of “Are You Sleeping”)

Are you eating, are you eating
Healthy foods, healthy foods?
For your body needs them, for your body needs them
Everyday, everyday.

Chop, chop, choppity-chop,
Cut off the bottom
And cut off the top;
What there’s left we will
Put in the pot;
Chop, chop, choppity-chop.

children guess which vegetables can
be chopped like this: carrots, onions,…

Slice, slice, the bread looks nice,
Spread, spread, butter on the bread;
On the top we’ll put some _________,
Now it’s even nicer for us to eat!

Lunch Box

Lunch box, lunch box,
what’s for lunch?
Peanut butter sandwich
and celery to crunch.
Carrots and bananas
and an apple to munch.
A bite, and a bite and A BITE
Now I’m heavy and my lunchbox is light!

Eve Merriam

I Eat

I eat apples-
crunch, crunch, crunch
I eat sandwiches-
munch, munch, munch
I eat lollipops-
lick, lick, lick
But I eat ice cream
quick, quick, quick!

Wash Your Hands

Wash your hands,
Before you eat,
A good health rule,
That’s hard to beat.
For better work,
For better play,
Eat three good meals,
Every day.
