Simple Machine Parts

Suggested Grades

Students will take apart and examine different parts in toys, through this they will better understand the concept of cause and effect in simple machines.

  • broken toys that operate through cause and effect, ask students to bring their own, or you can buy some from thrift stores or garage sales
  • a variety of tools, tiny screw drivers, hammers, pliers, etc.
  • recording sheets based on the one below:
THIS makes       THIS move
THIS makes       THIS move
THIS makes       THIS move

  • Hand out toys to each student and let them take the toys apart.
  • As they take the pieces off, ask them to choose at least three that cause other parts to move and place them in the appropriate boxes on the recording sheet.
  • Have students share these with the rest of the class.
