# Picture Multiplication

1-2

#### Objective

Students will be introduced to the concept groupings in multiplication.

#### Materials

• magazines, catalogues
• large piece of paper
• glue
• scissors

#### Method

• Have students look through magazines and cut out pictures of objects that can act as containers, yet don't have anything in them. eg: a few cars with no people inside, a few bookshelves with no books, empty bathtubs, etc. Ask students to focus on collecting a variety of pictures of one type of "container", then glue them on a large piece of paper.
• When students have collected their pictures, ask them to look in the magazines for pictures of things that could normally be placed in the container (eg. people for the cars, books for the shelves).
• Students then glue an equal number of objects on top of each of the container pictures they have collected (eg. four people in each of the cars, twelve books in each bookcase).
• On the bottom of the page ask the students to write out a multiplication equation that represents the picture (eg. four cars times four people(inside each one) equals sixteen people inside in total).
