Different Perspectives: A Graphic Organizer

Suggested Grades

3+

Objective

Students will read a text from a number of different perspectives which will result in a greater understanding of it. This is a good strategy to use to guide students through multiple readings of a text.

Method

  • Ask students to read through the text you would like them to study.
After this reading brainstorm with the class the variety of perspectives the text could be connected to.
eg: An article about urban development could be connected to a construction worker, the mayor, a citizen, a farmer, etc..
A piece of fiction could be connected to the various characters involved.
  • Split your class up into groups, and ask each group to pick a perspective and re-read the text from this person's perspective.
  • After reading, ask the groups to fill out the "Needs" and the "Concerns" section of the graphic organizer below.
  • Then, ask students to read the text again, looking for specific statements that would concern the perspective they took, and write them down on the graphic organizer. Right beside the statement, in the "Their Reaction" section ask the students to write down the reaction their perspective would have towards each statement.
  • After this is done, ask students to look at the information they recorded and write out a general summary of the position their perspective would take on the text.
  • Have a class discussion, sharing all the perspectives covered.
