Note: Not all of the following issues will apply to each person.
These are the types of challenges many Native people have had to overcome.
Towards me as a Native:
- A sense of shame of being native,
- A sense of alienation from family,
- A sense of helplessness, and/or powerlessness,
- A sense of anger towards authority,
- A distrust of power,
- A distrust of institutions
Towards me as a person:
- An attack on my personal self-esteem,
- A sense of failure, not measuring up,
- A sense that "I am not able to succeed",
- A lack of control in my life,
- A sense of victimization,
- An anger towards schooling,
- An acceptance that in today's society, my
children need an education
{Outwardly PASSIVE, Inwardly AGRESSIVE}
Question:
How do I, as a parent, deal with these issues
to make sure my children receive the
quality of education they deserve?
