Alphabet Battle

Suggested Grades

K-1

Objective

Students will get exposure to the placement of the letters of the alphabet in relation to all the other letters of the alphabet.

Materials

  • alphabet strips for each student
  • letters of the alphabet (paper cut outs, magnetic, or other) for each pair of students
  • containers for each pair of students
  • paper for keeping score
  • writing utensils

Method

  • Divide the class up into pairs and hand each student an alphabet strip. Then distribute a container of letters, a piece of paper, and a writing utensil to each pair.
  • Evenly divide up the letters in the container between each student. So every student will receive half a container of letters, half the alphabet and their partner will receive the other half.
  • Ask students to place their letters in their laps so their partner cannot see them.
  • The game begins by each player placing a letter on the desk at the same time. They each say their letter name aloud. The player with the letter closest to the letter Z wins, but they must correctly say "__ is closer to Z than ____. I win." The winner then collects both of the letters and begins their winning pile on top of the desk.
  • The game continues until all the letters are gone. The winner of the game is the student who has the most letter.
